Beach Hedonism: 3 Days Along the Catalan Coast (Sitges and Costa Brava)

Barcelona is wonderful, but if you want a truly Mediterranean LGBTQ+ holiday, you need to break free of the city. Just 40 minutes south is Sitges — the gay capital of the Mediterranean. To the north stretches the wild, romantic Costa Brava.

This three-day road trip combines pool parties, strolls through ancient fishing villages and seclusion in crystal-clear coves. Hire a convertible — and go.

Safety and Atmosphere

Safety Index: High

If there is anywhere on earth where the LGBTQ+ community is the absolute majority in summer, it is Sitges. Holding hands, kissing on the beach, parading in outrageous outfits — this is not merely accepted here, it is celebrated. The Costa Brava to the north is quieter and more family-oriented but equally safe and welcoming for same-sex couples.

Route Map

Route: Barcelona → Sitges → Tossa de Mar → Cadaqués

Day 1: Sitges — The Epicentre of Freedom

11:00 — Beach Chill

Drive straight from Barcelona to Sitges. The main gay beach is Platja de la Bassa Rodona. Set up your sun loungers, order ice-cold cava (Catalan sparkling wine) and soak it all in. Prefer nudism? Stroll a little further to the scenic Platja de l’Home Mort (the name sounds grim, but the beach is glorious).

21:00 — Dinner and the Street of Sin

Evening transforms Sitges. Have dinner on the Passeig Marítim promenade. After midnight, head to Carrer del Pecat (Street of Sin): dozens of gay bars ranging from relaxed pubs like Parrots Pub to loud dance clubs.

Days 2 and 3: The Wild Costa Brava

Day 2 — Tossa de Mar

After your morning coffee, get in the car and head north, past Barcelona, to the Costa Brava (about 1.5 hours from Sitges). Tossa de Mar is a stunning town where the medieval castle Vila Vella rises directly above the beach. Wander the stone lanes inside the ancient walls and dine on seafood at sunset.

Day 3 — Cadaqués

Further north still, along a winding coastal road (the drive itself is an adventure), lies Cadaqués — an isolated fishing village of white houses that was once the home of Salvador Dalí. It is an extraordinarily bohemian, stylish and remote place — the perfect romantic finale to your trip.

Practical Tips

Car: Sitges is easily reachable by train from Barcelona. But exploring the hidden coves of the Costa Brava and the hairpin roads to Cadaqués is impossible without a car — a hire car is essential.

Booking ahead: During Sitges Pride (June) and Bear Week (September), hotels sell out 6–8 months in advance.

FAQ

Are there nudist beaches on the Costa Brava? Many. Cala Boadella near Lloret de Mar is particularly good — a fine nudist section surrounded by pines.

This itinerary is the perfect cocktail: Sitges’s audacity, the wild beauty of the Costa Brava and the surrealism of Cadaqués. Catalonia at full volume.
