Saigon (as locals still prefer to call Ho Chi Minh City) is a city that never stops. As soon as you exit the airport, you are hit by a wave of humid tropical air and the roar of five million motorbikes. If Hanoi is the strict, thousand-year-old capital, Saigon is the capitalist, bold, and incredibly energetic metropolis. French colonial cathedrals reflect in the glass of ultramodern skyscrapers, and grandmothers sell the world’s best Pho on the sidewalk right next to a Chanel boutique. For LGBTQ+ travelers, Saigon offers the largest, loudest, and most open queer scene in all of Vietnam.

Safety and Cultural Code

Safety Index: Medium (8.5/10)

Saigon is more cosmopolitan than Hanoi. The local LGBTQ+ community here is huge and very active. However, Vietnam remains a country of traditional Asian values. The golden rule: public displays of affection on the streets are not welcomed for anyone. But in the gay bars of District 1, you can be completely relaxed and free. Saigonese are used to expats and tourists, so they treat same-sex couples with genuine hospitality.

Morning: French Charm and Iced Coffee

09:00 — The Heart of District 1

Start your day walking through District 1. See the Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica of Saigon and visit the Central Post Office, designed by Gustave Eiffel. It’s a slice of old Europe in the middle of the Asian jungle.

10:30 — Cà phê sữa đá

The Saigon heat demands cooling down. Sit at any authentic cafe on Dong Khoi street and order a traditional Vietnamese iced coffee with condensed milk (Cà phê sữa đá). It’s a thick, incredibly strong, and sweet drink that will give you energy for the whole day.

Ho Chi Minh City — District 1, Bui Vien, Cafe Apartments

Afternoon: History and Gastronomy

13:00 — War Remnants Museum

Even if you only have 24 hours, this museum is a must-visit. It’s a heavy but incredibly important experience that helps you understand what this country went through, and why modern Vietnamese value life and peace so much.

15:00 — Banh Mi and The Cafe Apartments

For lunch, grab the legendary Banh Mi sandwich — a crispy French baguette with pate, meat, and pickled vegetables. The best ones are at Banh Mi Huynh Hoa. Then head to the Nguyen Hue pedestrian street. Find The Cafe Apartments — an old nine-story residential building where every apartment has been turned into an independent coffee shop or boutique.

Evening and Night: From Bui Vien to Queer Clubs

20:00 — The Chaos of Bui Vien

Walk down Bui Vien street — the backpacker heart of the city. Neon signs, loud music, hundreds of outdoor bars, and people from all over the world. Have a cocktail here to feel the crazy rhythm of Saigon, but don’t stay too long.

22:30 — Saigon’s Gay Scene

The real LGBTQ+ life boils in the bars of District 1.

  • Thi Bar: A great place to start. Live music, an amazing international crowd, and a relaxed vibe.
  • Republic Lounge: If you want to dance to great pop and house, watch drag shows, and meet trendy locals — this is the place. The club stays open late, and the atmosphere is incredibly charged.
