Tropical Breeze & Freedom: 24 Hours in Kaohsiung

Tropical Breeze & Freedom: 24 Hours in Kaohsiung

Asia / Itineraries / City Break

Taiwan · Kaohsiung

· 11 min

If Taipei is the ever-rushing business center, Kaohsiung is its relaxed southern sibling, living to the rhythm of the ocean. The air here is warmer, the avenues are wider, and the smiles are even broader. This port city, once an industrial giant, has transformed into a hub of contemporary art and urban design. Kaohsiung is incredibly proud of its LGBTQ+ community, hosting one of the most vibrant and soulful Prides in Asia. In 24 hours, we will journey from ancient Taoist pagodas to old port warehouses that have become Taiwan’s trendiest art galleries.

Safety and Atmosphere

Safety Index: High (10/10)

Kaohsiung is absolutely safe. The local southern mentality is characterised by incredible warmth. Unlike Taipei, life here flows at a slower pace. Same-sex couples can walk hand-in-hand along the Love River or in the Pier-2 art district in complete peace. The queer culture here is less glamorous but much more homey and welcoming.

Morning: Light and Dragons

09:00 — Formosa Boulevard Station

Your journey begins underground. The Formosa Boulevard MRT station is a work of art. Its ceiling, the «Dome of Light», consists of 4,500 glass panels and is the world’s largest public glass installation. It’s a fantastic spot for morning photos.

10:30 — Lotus Pond

Head north to Lotus Pond. Here you will find the famous Dragon and Tiger Pagodas.

The Golden Rule of Luck: You must enter through the Dragon’s mouth and exit through the Tiger’s mouth. This is believed to turn bad luck into prosperity. The temple architecture reflected in the water looks incredibly cinematic.

Afternoon: Art and Black Sand

13:00 — Pier-2 Art Center

This is the heart of creative Kaohsiung. Abandoned waterfront warehouses have been handed over to artists. Today, it houses indie boutiques, Instagrammable cafes, murals, and LGBTQ+ friendly spaces. Grab an iced fruit tea and wander among the giant metal sculptures.

15:30 — Cijin Island

From the Pier-2 area (Sizihwan station), catch a ferry — the ride takes just 5 minutes. Cijin Island is a long sandbar with a black volcanic sand beach. Rent an electric bike, ride up to the lighthouse on the hill, and be sure to have lunch with the freshest seafood on the main street (around $20–$30 / €18–€28 for two).

Evening and Night: Night Markets and Queer Bars

19:00 — Ruifeng Night Market

Forget the touristy Liuhe market. Real life boils at Ruifeng Night Market. Huge crowds, hundreds of smells, and flavours. Try the Angel Fried Chicken and fried ice cream.

22:30 — The Xinxing District Gay Scene

Kaohsiung’s queer bars are concentrated near Formosa Boulevard station.

  • Hi-Light Bar: A great spot with a friendly crowd, karaoke, and a relaxed vibe.
  • Brickyard: If you want to dance, this club often hosts excellent LGBTQ+ parties, especially on weekends.

You won’t find snobbery here — southerners are the first to come up, introduce themselves, and buy you a drink.
