The Costa del Sol (Coast of the Sun) is a place where the sun shines 320 days a year, and the locals know how to throw a fiesta. For LGBTQ+ travelers, this region hides the perfect duo of two cities just 20 minutes apart. Málaga is the elegant, cultural birthplace of Picasso, where you can drink coffee overlooking an ancient fortress. Torremolinos is the bold, sexy, and absolutely wild capital of queer nightlife in southern Spain.

Safety and Atmosphere

Safety Index: High (9.5/10)

Málaga is a cosmopolitan city, but Torremolinos is a historic gay oasis. Back in the 1960s and 70s, during the Franco dictatorship, the first gay bars opened here. Today, the La Nogalera complex is an entire square dedicated completely to LGBTQ+ businesses. Holding your partner’s hand, wearing glitter or leather — it is simply the norm here.

Morning: Culture in Málaga

09:30 — Fortress and Art

Start your morning in the centre of Málaga. Climb up to the Alcazaba, an 11th-century Moorish palace-fortress. From there, you get a panoramic view of the port and the bullring. Then head to the Museo Picasso, located in the magnificent Buenavista Palace.

12:00 — Coffee at Plaza de la Merced

Sit at El Carmen or Calle de Bruselas in Plaza de la Merced — well-known gay-friendly spots in Málaga. Drink coffee, eat churros, and people-watch.

Afternoon: Train Ride and the Beaches of Torremolinos

14:00 — The Train to Paradise

Catch the Cercanías train (Line C1) at Málaga Centro-Alameda station. Just 20 minutes and a couple of euros later, you are in Torremolinos.

15:00 — Beach Hedonism

Head down to the gay beach. Your target is Eden Beach Club, the epicentre of daytime queer life. Rent sun loungers, order an ice-cold cocktail, and enjoy great music. For lunch, order traditional sardine skewers (espetos) roasted right on the sand in wooden boats.

Evening and Night: La Nogalera

20:00 — Dinner and Tapas

Torremolinos is a town with a cool 70s retro aesthetic. Have dinner in the centre, near the train station.

22:30 — The Labyrinth of La Nogalera

Nightlife is concentrated in the La Nogalera complex — an open-air labyrinth of squares and alleys filled exclusively with LGBTQ+ bars.

  • Warm-up: Start with Aqua Terrace or Ritual Copas — huge terraces, chat, and cocktails.
  • Drag Shows: Eden Copas or Parthenon host fabulous shows, often featuring traditional flamenco performed in drag!
  • Dancing: Around 2 AM the main clubs open. Centuryon is arguably the most stylish club in Torremolinos, with great DJs and go-go dancers.
