Marble Gorges and Red Lanterns: 3 Days Exploring Taiwan's Natural Wonders

Taipei is an incredible metropolis, but the true soul of Taiwan lies beyond the city limits. This is an island of towering mountains, dense tropical forests, dramatic ocean cliffs, and steaming hot springs. If you have 3 days to spare, this itinerary lets you break free from the neon jungle and dive into absolute Zen. We will head to the deepest marble gorges, wander streets that inspired Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away, and relax in thermal waters. The perfect romantic and spiritual escape for queer couples.

Safety and Inclusivity Beyond the Capital

Safety outside the capital: 10/10

Even in remote mountain villages and on tea plantations, the level of safety and respect for tourists is a solid 10/10. Locals here are among the most welcoming people in Asia. English may be less common in the countryside, but a translation app and a genuine smile will open any door.

Day 1: The Power of Nature — Taroko Gorge

08:00 — Heading East

Leave Taipei early in the morning. Taiwan’s east coast is where emerald mountains drop straight into the Pacific Ocean. Make sure to stop at the Qingshui Cliffs for a jaw-dropping view.

12:00 — In the Heart of the Marble Gorge

Taroko National Park is a world wonder. A river has carved a giant canyon through solid marble. Head to the Shakadang Trail (Mysterious Valley Trail) where the water is a crystal-clear turquoise, or walk through the tunnels of the Swallow Grotto.

(Note: The gorge occasionally closes after typhoons — always check trail statuses before you go.)

Taroko — Jiufen — Beitou: 3-day route

Day 2: Nostalgia and Tea — Jiufen

13:00 — The Village of Red Lanterns

Heading back north, make your way to the mountain village of Jiufen. A former gold-mining town, it has transformed into a labyrinth of narrow, steep staircases draped with hundreds of red paper lanterns.

16:00 — Tea Ceremony

Find the famous A-Mei Tea House. Order a traditional Taiwanese tea ceremony featuring high-mountain oolong. Sitting on the wooden terrace, enveloped in mist with views of the ocean and green hills, you will experience an extraordinary sense of peace.

Day 3: Rebirth — Beitou Hot Springs

11:00 — Thermal Valley and Pure Relaxation

On day three, before returning to the capital, head to Beitou — a northern suburb of Taipei. The air smells of sulfur, and steam constantly rises above the eerie Thermal Valley.

Important LGBTQ+ tip for hot springs

Traditional public bathhouses in Taiwan are strictly gender-segregated and require full nudity. If this is uncomfortable for you or your partner (for example, for trans or non-binary folks), or if you have tattoos, the perfect solution is to book a Private Hot Spring Room at a hotel. You get a personal thermal pool for 2–3 hours — just the two of you, maximum romance and privacy.

Logistics and Transport

Driving in Taipei can be chaotic due to millions of scooters, and mountain bus schedules in Taroko will eat half your day. The secret to a perfect trip: book a private car charter with an English-speaking driver. You get absolute freedom, air conditioning, and a local who knows the best spots away from the crowds.
