Morning: the cathedral and the river
09:00 — Kölner Dom before the crowds
Start at the Cologne Cathedral — a UNESCO Gothic colossus that took 632 years to finish. Climb the 533 steps of the south tower early, before the queues, for the best view of the Rhine bends. Then cross the Hohenzollern Bridge among its million love locks.
11:30 — Old Town and the Rhine promenade
Walk the Altstadt riverside: pastel guildhouses, the Great St. Martin church, brewery taverns already pouring Kölsch — the city’s beloved 0.2-litre beer that waiters replace until you put a coaster on your glass. Lunch here, riverside.
Afternoon: art and the Belgian Quarter
14:00 — Museum Ludwig
Behind the cathedral, Museum Ludwig holds one of Europe’s great modern art collections — Picasso in depth, German expressionism, American pop. Two hours well spent.
16:30 — Belgisches Viertel
Stroll west into the Belgian Quarter — Cologne’s hippest blocks: independent boutiques, café terraces around St. Michael’s church, and a young, mixed, visibly queer crowd. Coffee at Brüsseler Platz is the local ritual.
Evening: the Bermuda Triangle
19:30 — Dinner near Rudolfplatz
Eat around Rudolfplatz — anything from rheinish classics to Lebanese — because the night happens within two blocks of here.
21:30 — Schaafenstraße bar crawl
The “Bermuda Triangle” around Schaafenstraße is the heart of gay Cologne: the highest density of LGBTQ+ bars in Germany along 150 metres, crowds spilling onto the street on weekends. The classic run:
- ExCorner — pop classics, happy hours and karaoke; everyone’s first stop.
- Die Mumu — half bar, half club, pink walls and glitter stars; campy and joyous.
- Iron — cocktail lounge for a slower, smarter drink between the loud rooms.
No door policies, no dress codes — the opposite of the Berlin myth. You’ll be in conversation within one Kölsch.
ColognePride 2026
Festival 19 June – 5 July; free street festival 3–5 July around Heumarkt; the CSD parade — over a million people — on Sunday 5 July from 11:30, setting off from Deutzer Brücke. Book accommodation months ahead, and don’t rule out February: Cologne Carnival is its own queer high season.
