About the country

Germany is the heart of queer Europe and a country where personal freedom is almost a religion. For a century Berlin has been the legendary capital of LGBTQ+ nightlife — from Weimar-era cabaret to Berghain and the Schöneberg district. Cologne adds a warm Rhineland scene and one of the largest Pride parades on the continent. For queer travellers Germany blends absolute safety, a powerful history of resistance and a party that never ends.

LGBTQ+ in this country

Germany legalised same-sex marriage in 2017, and since November 2024 the Self-Determination Act (Selbstbestimmungsgesetz) allows people to change their legal gender marker without medical certificates or a court process. Berlin's Schöneberg has been a historic gay village since the early 20th century, and Berghain is the most famous club on the planet. Christopher Street Day and Folsom Europe draw hundreds of thousands.
