About the country

Portugal is one of Europe's fastest-rising queer destinations and one of the most progressive countries in the world on LGBTQ+ rights. Lisbon with its bohemian Príncipe Real district, vintage Porto on the banks of the Douro, and the golden beaches of the Algarve offer safety, a mild climate and prices noticeably lower than Western Europe. A warm, unhurried and genuinely friendly destination.

LGBTQ+ in this country

Portugal legalised same-sex marriage in 2010 and joint adoption in 2016. Its 2018 gender self-identification law is considered one of the most progressive in the world, allowing a gender change from age 16 without medical reports. Sexual orientation is protected at constitutional level. Lisbon's Príncipe Real district is the heart of local queer life.
