Kathmandu hits you with chaos, noise, and dust. Pokhara offers serenity, clear air, and quiet. The city sits on the shores of mirror-like Phewa Lake, with the snow-capped 8,000-meter peaks of the Annapurna range and the sacred Mount Machapuchare rising into the sky right behind it. Pokhara is the paragliding capital of the world and the main base for Himalayan trekking. For LGBTQ+ travelers, this city is the most relaxed spot in Nepal. The vibe is resort-like, the crowd is international, and the Lakeside district offers indie cafes, spas, and live music.

Safety and the Island of Freedom Vibe (Safety First)

Pokhara earns a 9.5/10 on the safety scale. It is a tourism oasis where locals have hosted global travelers for decades, and tolerance runs high. Same-sex couples feel free renting boats or dining on waterfront terraces. The basic rule of public restraint regarding PDA applies in traditional areas, but Lakeside’s atmosphere is more liberal than Kathmandu.

Morning: Golden Mountains and a Boat to the Temple

05:30 — Sunrise at Sarangkot

Wake up before dawn. Hire a taxi and head up to the Sarangkot viewpoint. In the morning stillness, you will watch the first rays of the sun paint the snow-white peaks of Annapurna and Machapuchare bright pink, then gold. The spectacle will take your breath away.

09:30 — Boating on Phewa Lake

Coming down from the mountains, head to Lakeside’s boat station. Rent a colorful wooden boat (doonga) with a rower or paddle yourself. The calm surface of the lake mirrors the snowy peaks. Stop in the middle of the lake at the island Hindu sanctuary, Tal Barahi Temple.

Afternoon: The Peace Pagoda and Gastronomy

12:30 — Lunch with a Lake View

Lakeside is packed with good eateries. Drop by Fresh Elements or Moondance Restaurant. Try fresh baked lake fish or a traditional Dal Bhat set (lentil soup, rice, curry, and pickles) to fuel the day. Lunch for two runs around $15–$25 (€14–€23).

15:00 — World Peace Pagoda (Shanti Stupa)

Take a boat to the opposite shore of the lake and hike up through thick forest (about 45 minutes) to the snow-white Peace Pagoda built by Japanese monks. The summit offers the widest panoramic view of Phewa Lake, Pokhara, and the soaring Himalayas.

Evening and Night: Lakeside’s Live Sound

18:30 — Strolling Along Lakeside

Evening Pokhara is tailor-made for slow strolls. Visit a local spa for a foot massage after your hike or pop into bookstores that smell of old paper and fresh coffee.

21:00 — Musical Relaxation

Pokhara has no dedicated gay clubs because the venues on Lakeside welcome everyone.

Where to go in Lakeside

Busy Bee Cafe is legendary — where queer expats, climbers, and travelers gather. Great live rock, massive beer selection, dancing, and an incredibly social atmosphere. Paradiso Bar is a great waterfront spot with live acoustic music and an open-air fireplace for cocktails.

Practical Solution: Getting There and Staying

Fly, don't bus

Never travel from Kathmandu to Pokhara by tourist bus — the 200 km road can take up to 8–10 grueling hours. Book a domestic flight (Buddha Air or Yeti Air) instead — just 25 minutes, with stunning Himalayan window views.
