Touching the Sky: 4-Day Poon Hill Trek from Pokhara
Asia / Itineraries / Trekking & Nature
Nepal · Pokhara
Pokhara does more than serve as a lakeside hangout. It is the main gateway to the Himalayas. If you have 4 days, go trekking. You don’t need to be a professional mountaineer to see the 8,000-meter peaks up close. The Poon Hill Trek is the most accessible romantic short route in the Annapurna Conservation Area. You hike through rhododendron forests, cross suspension bridges over raging rivers, and watch the sunrise while standing above the clouds. For LGBTQ+ couples, trekking together in the Himalayas builds a bond and leaves memories that last a lifetime.
Safety and Privacy in the Mountains
Trekking in Nepal is safe (9.5/10). Prejudices have no place on mountain trails. A love for nature unites the tourists and Nepalese you meet along the way.
Secret for queer couples
In the mountains, you sleep in teahouses (basic guesthouses). Always hire a private guide — a good guide not only navigates but pre-books private rooms with a double bed in the best teahouses, saving you from communal dormitories.
Day 1: From Pokhara to the Jungle (Tikhedhunga / Ulleri)
08:00 — The Start
Your guide picks you up from your hotel in Pokhara. You take a jeep (about 2 hours) to the village of Nayapul or Birethanti — the starting point of the trek.
11:00 — First Steps
Today brings a gradual ascent through lush subtropical forests. You cross mountain rivers on long iron suspension bridges. The air gets cooler and cleaner with every kilometer. Overnight in Tikhedhunga or Ulleri. Physical exertion: Moderate (about 4–5 hours of walking).
Day 2: Stone Steps and the Magic Forest (Ghorepani)
09:00 — The Challenge
The morning begins with the hardest stage, the famous 3,000 stone steps up to Ulleri village. Keep your own pace (Bistari, bistari, slowly, slowly in Nepali).
13:00 — The Rhododendron Forest
After the steps, the trail levels out and enters a dense ancient forest. In spring (March–April), the rhododendron trees bloom with giant red and pink flowers. By evening, you reach Ghorepani (2,874 m). Gather around the stove, eat hot Dal Bhat, and go to bed early — tomorrow starts early.
Day 3: Sunrise at the Top of the World (Poon Hill)
04:30 — Ascent in the Dark
Armed with headlamps, you begin the 45-minute climb from Ghorepani to the summit of Poon Hill (3,210 m).
06:00 — Catharsis
You stand at the summit. A 360-degree panorama of the Himalayas surrounds you. As the sun rises, it sets the Dhaulagiri (8,167 m) and Annapurna (8,091 m) massifs in blazing gold. Turn to your partner and take it in. You climbed here together.
10:00 — Descent to Tadapani
After breakfast, you start the descent along incredibly beautiful ridges to the village of Tadapani for the night.
Day 4: Triumphant Return to Pokhara
08:00 — The Way Down
Descend through the village of Ghandruk (home to the Gurkha people). The landscape changes to terraced rice paddies. After lunch, a jeep takes you back to Pokhara.
16:00 — Relaxing in Lakeside
Back at your hotel. Take a hot shower (the best of your life after 4 days in the mountains!), go for an Ayurvedic foot massage, and celebrate your ascent with a cocktail on the shores of Phewa Lake.
Practical Solution: Booking the Trek
Book in advance
Organizing permits (TIMS and ACAP), jeep logistics, and private rooms during high season is stressful. Book an all-inclusive trek with a private guide and porter in advance — the porter carries your heavy gear so you hike lightly with a daypack.
Where to Stay in Pokhara (Before and After the Trek)?
- Well-Deserved Rest (Luxury): Fishtail Lodge — A legendary hotel on a peninsula (accessible only by private raft ferry). King Charles and Jimmy Carter stayed here. Perfect privacy, a pool, and silence for muscle recovery. ($150–$200 / €140–€185)
